Category: Events

31st August – 6th September

Private view: Tuesday 2nd September, 6:30pm – 9:30pm

Julia Roder, Kis’Keya and Steven Doussou-Yovo are internationally acclaimed artists working in diverse mediums and inspired by divergent and merging themes, a multi-layering of aesthetic and human references that engage and provoke their audience.

Julia Roder is inspired by the power of colour and the ‘expressions’ in the eyes of a woman, the main focus in her creative process. Her paintings speak to one in terms of purity, sensuality, happiness, peace and balance, all of which culminate in the sensual lines and simple curves of her female subject matter. Her love of travel and discovering new cultures is also captured in her use of vivid and exuberant colours in her backgrounds. Julia has exhibited extensively in her native Germany and in Spain, where she now resides and this is her first exhibition in London.

In contrast, although dealing in the same female subject matter Kis’ Keya describes her work as ...’when the figurative delves into the abstract...’ In recent years, as a painter and sculptor, Kis’keya has been exploring the theme of the femininity of forms, the female body and the desire to seek and reveal the soul. Her series, ‘Les Cicatrices de la Lune - Scars of the Moon’, looks at the vague appearance of reality, traces of existence, a thought for the passage of time, with reference to the female struggle and its resulting fragile existence.

Kis'keya is of Haitian and Congolese origin, and lives in Belgium. She has exhibited in France and Belgium and this too will be her first exhibition in the UK.

The renowned French artist Stevens Dossou-Yovo is a student of the Penninghen school of Architecture and Graphic Design, Paris and was a first prize winner of the prestigious Marin Fine Art award in 2000. He sees Francis Bacon as an inspiration, as well as the kinetic study of human and animal forms’, resulting in his signature automates. His recent metal sculptures explore the perception of space by playing with perspective and illusion and this exhibition showcases a selection of his latest studies in this genre. Stevens has exhibited widely in Europe and exhibited in London in 2007.

Cocoa Arts is proud to be representing these artists and fulfilling our vision to promote the works of artists from Africa, the Diaspora and beyond. We are passionate about our purpose and that is to diffuse the mysticism associated with Contemporary African art by bringing art from this region to new audiences and exciting opportunities to our artists.

Special thanks to The Christopher Okigbo Foundation for supporting this exhibition.
